Core Aeration
What It Is and Why Do It?
Core aeration is a lawn care practice designed to improve the health of turf by addressing soil compaction and enhancing the flow of air, water, and nutrients to the grassroots. Core aeration involves the use of a machine, called a core aerator or lawn aerator that pulls out small plugs of soil from the lawn. These plugs are typically 1/2 to 3/4 inches in diameter and 2 to 3 inches long. The holes left behind allow for better air, water, and nutrient movement into the soil.
Benefits of Core Aeration
Reduces Soil Compaction Improves Air Exchange
Enhances Water Absorption Promotes Nutrient Uptake
Reduces Thatch Buildup Enhances Seed Germination
